Two MCLA Graduates Publish Online Auction Newsletter: AuctionBytes.com November 8, 1999, Natick, Mass.– Two Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (formerly North Adams State College) graduates
have created a Web site and newsletter about using Internet online auctions to make money. AuctionBytes.com, the Buyers and Sellers Guide to Online Auctions,
is a new monthly newsletter targeted to both novice and experienced users of online auctions, such as eBay, Yahoo Auctions, and Amazon.com Auctions. AuctionBytes.com
offers practical advice to make the online auction buying and selling process easier and more efficient. Ina (Champ) Steiner, MCLA/NASC class of 1985, and David Steiner, MCLA/NASC class of 1987, got the idea for the
newsletter in August after discovering online auction sites. David Steiner, a video producer in the Boston area, needed to sell an expensive piece of professional video equipment. After unsuccessfully trying traditional
methods, a colleague told him about eBay, where Steiner proceeded to sell the equipment in 10 days for a price that he was very happy with. "I was astounded that I could sell a high-ticket item costing thousands of
dollars so easily and quickly. I admit, I had been skeptical. It was the first time I had used an online auction site. But the transaction went so smoothly, I was hooked," said Steiner. David's sisters, Kim and
Michele Alice of Williamstown, then asked him to sell some items. One violin and a comic book collection later, David and Ina Steiner realized that the millions of other people using online auctions had the same
questions they had. They conceived the idea of the AuctionBytes.com newsletter and Web site. "We discovered a whole new world of entrepreneurs, collectors and hobbyists. We discovered that some retailers, like
antique-store owners and comic-book-store owners, were actually selling their stores to focus on online auction selling. We decided to create a newsletter that would address the unique needs of business people and
collectors who use online auction sites. Online auctions are e-commerce for the rest of us," states Ina Steiner. AuctionBytes.com is written by veteran online auction users and explains the
business-side of online auctions. Users face a host of issues that all businesses face daily: they need to track inventory, develop pricing strategies, advertise, invoice, package, ship and provide customer service.
AuctionBytes.com provides solutions to problems . The preview issue of AuctionBytes.com
newsletter features an interview with top sellers who share their secrets of success. Other stories include: advice on taking better photographs of auction items, searching effectively for items to buy, getting inventory at yard sales, and current prices of bubble wrap (a sought-after commodity by online auctioners!). A column entitled "Ask Bill the Postman," written by a veteran postal worker, debuts in this issue. Readers and visitors to the
AuctionBytes.com Web site are welcome to ask Bill the Postman questions about mailing their auction items to winning bidders. AuctionBytes.com
also features a monthly column called Collector's Corner where experienced collectors offer advice on buying and selling collectibles on online auctions. Subjects range from antiques to comics and deal with issues such as:
How do I value my collection? and What are the best books and Web resources in this area? AuctionBytes.com
is published monthly, ten times a year, for $29.99, with a special introductory price of $24.99 good through March 1, 2000. The preview issue is available for free on the AuctionBytes.com
Web site. (http://www.auctionbytes.com.) Volume 1, Number 1, will be available January 2000.
