The latest "Chubb's Antiques Roadshow" television program was taped in New Orleans on Saturday. Furniture expert Leslie Keno appraised a 17th century Italian mosaic game table at $175,000. The owner was a New Orleans native who informed Leslie Keno that he inherited the table from his great-great grandfather. Astonished by the table's ornate beauty, Keno raved, "This table is one of the most magnificent American Gothic Revival tables I have ever seen. The imported pietra dura marble top is of fabulous quality and the rosewood base is from one of the top cabinet shops in New York from the 1840's."
A Covington woman brought in a signed Rembrandt print that she had received as a wedding gift 25 years ago. The drawing portrayed the virgin and child with a snake and cat. Todd Weyman of Swann Galleries valued the print at $15,000 - $20,000. Other standout items discovered at the New Orleans appraisal event include a 19th century edition of the United States Constitution from the library of Jefferson Davis valued at $15,000 - $20,000; a game box set made in 1911 worth $18,000 - $20,000; and fight tickets from the first modern day heavyweight championship boxing match between John L. Sullivan and James J. Corbett in 1892, appraised between $5,000 - $7,000.
The Antiques Roadshow appraisal tour will conclude in Indianapolis on August 18. The program airs Mondays at 8 p. m. on PBS (check local listings), and this latest tour will air in the fall.
