eBay to Use FAST Technology to Speed Its Search Capability

eBay will use a tool from Fast Search & Transfer ASA to provide eBay users with faster, more accurate listing, bid and query results. FAST Data Search will dramatically reduce the time it takes for new items to become listed on the site and available to users. When a seller posts an item on eBay, it may take hours for the search engine to display the item in results pages. "eBay users will notice a marked improvement with FAST," eBay spokesperson Kevin Pursglove stated.

AuctionBytes consulted with a search and retrieval expert at International Data Corp., a market research firm, to confirm FAST's performance. "FAST technology has been known to cut indexing lag times from 6-12 hours to 34 minutes. It was designed to handle high volume of queries and documents and to process them as fast as possible," according to IDC analyst Susan Feldman, Director of Content and Document Technologies.

eBay said the new system will be in place late this year or early next year.
