eBay announced a program in which its members will be able to buy and sell goods specifically for the purpose of raising money for the victims and families of last Tuesday's terrorist attacks. The company hopes its community will be able to raise $100 million in 100 days through a separate "Auction for America" category on the site.
The charity items will be highlighted throughout the eBay site so that buyers can clearly identify them. Once a sale is made, all proceeds from the transaction will be contributed directly to the charity selected by the seller. In order for eBay to guarantee payments to the charities, all "Auction for America" transactions will be processed through Billpoint, eBay's online credit card payments service. eBay, along with its partners, Visa USA, MasterCard International, Wells Fargo Bank and Discover Financial Services Inc., will waive all of their customary fees. AOL Time Warner has agreed to provide marketing support and products for this effort. One hundred percent of the money raised by every transaction will go to charity. To start the march towards the goal of $100 million in 100 days, the eBay Foundation will contribute the first $1 million dollars.
Sellers will not have to pay listing and final value fees, but they will have to pay shipping and handling fees, and one hundred percent of the proceeds go to charity. eBay will give sellers a charitable donation receipt for tax purposes. http://www.ebay.com
