eBay announced that the Nimda Worm had infected iPIX, its third party provider of eBay Picture Services. eBay learned of the problem Tuesday afternoon and took eBay Picture Services offline and began working with iPIX to address the issue. The ability to view eBay Picture Services images within live listings was not interrupted during this time. eBay brought the service back online yesterday.
eBay said it does not yet know exactly how many users this issue may have affected, but said that only members on Windows who were uploading photos Tuesday afternoon through eBay Picture Services and the Sell Your Item form would have been at any risk, if at all. Of those members, those with updated antivirus software would not have been affected. eBay said that simply viewing an image uploaded through eBay Picture Services and the Sell Your Item form would not have transmitted the worm. eBay recommended that those members who were using the Sell Your Item form with eBay Picture Services on Tuesday afternoon take steps to ensure they were not affected.
