eBay Backs Down, Apologizes Over Checkout Feature

eBay said it will make its new Checkout feature optional after confusion and anger continued to be expressed by buyers and sellers on the site. eBay's Checkout feature is a tool that buyers use to complete their eBay purchases. Sellers had the option of using the automated features of Checkout, but all eBay buyers were confronted with the Checkout button upon winning an auction item. After weeks of confusion, eBay said yesterday that it would change the feature so that buyers would only see the Checkout button for auctions when sellers choose to use the feature. The Checkout feature had also caused technical problems due to incompatibilities with third-party auction-management software.

eBay apologized to its members in yesterday's announcement, stating "We apologize to those members of our selling community who may have been inconvenienced and will continue to do all we can to provide a better process for eBay sellers and buyers."

When asked if Checkout would always remain an optional feature, an eBay spokesman said that while there were no plans to return Checkout to a mandatory feature, he could not guarantee that it would always remain optional.

More information about eBay's checkout feature can be found at http://pages.ebay.com/checkout/faq.html
