Lawsuit Filed Against WGBH Over ''Antiques Roadshow'' TV Program
By Ina Steiner AuctionBytes.com February 25, 2002
Daniel M. Farrell has sued WGBH for $130,000 for failing to comply with their licensing agreement. The AP reports Farrell is claiming Boston's public television station won't let him audit its records.
The Antiques Roadshow first aired in the U.K. in 1977, where it continues to be popular. Mr. Farrell bought American rights to the show in 1981 and sold them to WGBH Boston, which has been producing the show in the United States since 1996 (the first show premiered on January 9, 1997.) Dan Farrell's name appears in the credits of Antiques Roadshow with the title "Consulting Producer," and he helps put together the roster of experts who appear on the show.
According to Judy Matthews, Senior Publicist for the Antiques Roadshow, the station had not yet been served with the complaint, but said, "This is a business dispute that we hope will be resolved shortly."
The Chubb Group of Insurance Companies has sponsored the program since its American debut, and eBay joined as sponsor in 2001. The show visits cities around the U.S., inviting people to bring family heirlooms and flea market finds for a free appraisal by experts from the leading auction houses and independent appraisers. The Antiques Roadshow airs on most PBS stations Monday nights at 8:00 pm.
