Yahoo! called its recent "Biggest Sale in Internet History" a success, driving a surge in sales across Yahoo! properties. Listings in the Yahoo! Auctions $1 Showcase experienced a 71 percent sell-through rate. Yahoo! Shopping experienced a 25 percent lift in gross merchandise sales, and activity on Yahoo! PayDirect increased by 50 percent.
Yahoo! heavily promoted the sale, called "The Biggest Sale in Internet History," which was held from Wednesday, March 13 through Friday, March 15, 2002. Yahoo! Auctions kicked off the sale by offering sellers a Free Listing Day on March 12th to attract seller listings. In January, Yahoo! Auctions held a similar Free Listing Day, after which it reported that the number of auction listings on the site had doubled.
"We are thrilled with the results of The Biggest Sale in Internet History and are proud to have created an event that was so compelling for both consumers and our merchants," said John Costello, chief marketing officer, Yahoo!. "The Biggest Sale demonstrates Yahoo!'s strength as a marketing partner and transactional platform while highlighting the breadth and depth of products and services available across the Yahoo! network."
Yahoo!'s commerce offering includes Yahoo! Auctions, Yahoo! Shopping, Yahoo! Travel and Yahoo! Warehouse. During 2001, Yahoo! directly enabled more than $5.4 billion in commerce transactions on its platform worldwide.
