Reading AuctionBytes: Justice Dept. Closes Antitrust Investigation Against eBay, Company Reports

eBay said the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice has closed its investigation against the auction site without taking action. The information was contained in eBay's 10-K document filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday.

The antitrust investigation was an inquiry into eBay's conduct with respect to "auction aggregators," including its licensing program and its recently settled lawsuit against Bidder's Edge.

eBay had sued Bidder's Edge in December 1999 for "trespassing" on its site. eBay won an injunction to stop the comparison shopping site from sending its search robots into the eBay site. Bidder's Edge closed its site last year citing market and financing conditions, and one month later it settled its dispute with eBay.

George Reinhart, former Vice President of Marketing at BiddersEdge, is now president and CEO of BidXS.com, an online auction search engine. Reinhart was responsible for securing a licensing agreement with eBay to allow BidXS.com to include eBay auctions in its search results.
