There are a variety of classes for eBay Live
attendees. Chris Spencer, an eBay powerseller, taught "Advanced Selling Tips & Merchandising" on Friday afternoon. The large class was packed full of people when I entered the room at 2:30 for the class, scheduled for 2:45.
The previous class was winding down with a question & answer period.
"I use Billpoint, and I can't access funds until 2 to
3 days after they have been deposited. Why can't I
access the funds right away?"
"I have a question about Keyword spamming. I list items that have to do with other products, and I need to mention those brand names."
"Is there a danger of using a name I want to trademark before technically getting the trademark?"
"What are the fees for "Buy It Now" if I relist the
item?"
These were some of the questions that the attendees were asking instructor Chris Spencer from the audience.
Outside the sessions, attendees are friendly and
relaxed. Inside the classroom, it's all business.
Spencer was able to field the questions skillfully. He warned against using someone else's brand name, since anyone who did would risk trademark infringement. And if you have trademark questions, you should consult with the U.S. Patents & Trademark office, or consult a
trademark attorney.
Attendees were eager to learn from Spencer, whom eBay contracts to give eBay University classes. As he introduced himself to the next class, he shared his eBay story.
Last year, Spencer lost 110 pounds on the Atkins diet. But he discovered that he was still unhappy, and realized the reason was because he wasn't doing what he enjoyed.
Spencer discovered eBay and loved it, and he told all his friends about it. His passion for selling on eBay launched him into powerseller status.
eBay asked Spencer to give a class at eBay University, and he has been sharing his selling tips ever since. Some of the things he covered in the class were:
Pricing philosophies
When to use "Buy It Now"
When to use optional features
When to open an eBay Store
Cross promoting to other items
Taking the best photographs
Using other photo hosting options
If Friday is any indication, eBay users plan to get their money's worth out of the experience. Classes continue on Saturday and Sunday and range from selling tips to planning your eBay business. It costs $45 to attend the event, and people can get an expo-only pass for $15
