MIT will host the Interdisciplinary Symposium on Reputation Mechanisms in Online Communities on April 26-27, 2003, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The conference seeks to explore online reputation reporting systems, such as eBay's well-known feedback mechanism. "The rising practical importance of online reputation systems invites rigorous research in this largely virgin territory. Do these systems truly promote efficient market outcomes? To what extent can they be manipulated by strategic buyers and sellers? What is the best way to design them? How should buyers (and sellers) use the information provided by such mechanisms in their decision-making process?"
In addition to professors presenting academic papers, employees representing eBay, epinions and Open Ratings will be on an industry panel to discuss their feedback systems.
Chrysanthos (Chris) Dellarocas, Associate Professor of Management at MIT's Sloan School of Management, is the workshop chair.
