eBay Retracts Unannounced Category Change
By Ina Steiner

eBay booksellers were in a tizzy this week when eBay changed the Book category without warning. Since the sellers were unable to find Books, which eBay moved under the "Entertainment" category on Wednesday, they were wondering how buyers were going to find their listings. Most also questioned why books would be placed under Entertainment. Others were concerned about broken links.

Powersellers who complained got an email apology from eBay for the frustration the category restructuring caused, and a reason for the change. "Across eBay, we have seen increases in both listings and sales as a result of combining the categories into central marketplaces,...Our goal was to make it easier for buyers to browse from one category to another."

Most upsetting to those posting on the boards was the lack of any kind of notification from eBay of the change. Apparently, eBay was listening. One day after making the change, eBay posted on its announcement board that it would return Books to its former place on the Homepage as a separate link. "In the future, we will do a better job of working with you in advance of changes of this nature."
