eBay is bringing its picture-hosting service in-house, but will continue to use iPIX technology. eBay launched eBay Picture Services in 2000 in a revenue-share agreement with iPIX. Sellers could drag and drop two free images per listing into the eBay Sell Your Item form, and drag and drop up to four additional images for an additional fee.
The two companies renegotiated their contract last month, which was set to expire at the end of September. Under the new contract, eBay is licensing imaging technology from iPIX. Rather than hosting images on iPIX servers, eBay will host images on their own servers with the auction data.
An announcement on eBay's board said is developing its own proprietary Picture Services solution and will be transitioning away from its relationship with iPIX during the fall. eBay is offering a beta test of this feature that members can try during their normal listing process and is asking for feedback on any technical issues encountered.
eBay Picture Services is an optional photo-hosting solution, and sellers who use third-party image-hosting services should not be affected.
