eBay was inaccessible for nearly 3 hours last night. eBay blamed a power outage at its primary hosting facility. All functions, including searching, bidding and listing were unavailable Wednesday from 20:55pm PST until 23:45pm PST.
eBay said it would credit all listing fees to sellers, and it extended all listings scheduled to end between 20:55 PDT, 20 Aug and 02:00 PDT, 21 Aug for 24 hours. eBay will also credit the 10-cent listing fee for 10-day auctions for all listings that were active at 20:55 PDT.
The outage came 2 days after the Denver Business Journal reported that eBay was shopping for data center space in Colorado to help protect its infrastructure. eBay spokesperson Kevin Pursglove was quoted, saying the blackouts in San Jose in 1998 first got them thinking about additional redundant data centers.
