eBay Turns 8, Splits Stock

eBay announced its 8th birthday this weekend, and is celebrating by splitting its stock and offering users a limited edition collector's pin.

Pierre Omyidar created AuctionWeb on Labor Day 1995. In 1998, he and co-founder Jeff Skoll brought in Meg Whitman, the company's current President and CEO. Whitman took the company public in 1998. The company announced in its last quarterly report it would split its stock in a two-for-one stock split, payable in the form of a stock dividend, having a record date of August 4, 2003, and taking effect as of August 28, 2003.

(Companies often split their stock when they believe the price of their stock exceeds the amount smaller individual investors would be willing to pay for the stock.)

To "celebrate the special occasion" of the company turning 8, eBay is making 500 commemorative pins for sale.
