eBay Free-Listing-Day Promos Cause Confusion, Glitch Strikes Canada
By Ina Steiner AuctionBytes.com January 08, 2004
An eBay merchant in the UK said eBay's Free Listing Day is causing confusion because eBay does not make it clear that bulk re listing is free. eBay is holding Free Listing Day promotions January 8 for sellers in the UK and Canada.
"I started bulk re listing items just after midnight," the UK merchant said. "Once again there was no reference to it being a free day. Page 5 told me I would be charged. I decided then to try and re list just ONE item. This time Page 5 [of the Sell Your Item form] told me I would be re credited as it was a free day."
When eBay UK held a FLD on November 6, 2003, a major technical glitch caused sellers to be charged despite the promise of free listings, but they were credited for the fees that applied under the promotion.
Another merchant complained that eBay made an error in their description of eBay Canada's Free Listing Day. "eBay is charging for anything over the $1 cdn - so you have to adapt the opening bid in US$ to fit in under the $1 cdn. I told them about this and they're investigating." The page describing the Canadian promotion clearly states, "Free Listings for items starting at $1.00 or less in US or Canadian Dollars."
An announcement posted on the Canadian Board at 11 am Eastern time explained eBay Canada was experiencing a glitch: "We are currently experiencing a technical problem with the free listing day today for listings beginning at $1 US/CAD and under. We are currently working with our technical department to resolve it. Credit will be issued by eBay for fees incurred with listings beginning at $1 US and $1CAD and under. We are sorry for the inconvenience, and hope you will continue to take advantage of the Free Listing Day."
eBay held a Free Listing Day promotion in the U.S. on December 26, 2003.
