MastroNet Inc., a major collectibles auction site, closed the most successful multi-consignment Sports and Americana auction in history at its December auction. At $10. 2 million, the MastroNet event eclipsed the previous auction record of just under $9.2 million set by MastroNet in November 2000.
William Mastro, CEO of MastroNet Inc. said, "Our reputation in Americana collectibles is quickly approaching the level for which we are known for Sports," added Mastro. "It is obvious from the quality of the consignments and the prices realized that we have developed a winning combination that appeals to a wide variety of collectors."
Highlights of the December 2003 auction include a 1926 Sesquicentennial $2-1/2 NGC PF65, the second of only two gold commemoratives of this denomination ($2.50) ever produced (sold for $194,736.00); "The Sante Fe Trail" by Frank Tenney Johnson, N. A. (1874-1939), mural completed in 1928 used as a backdrop for a western theme park (sold for $126,788.00); the 2003 Infamous Chicago Cubs Foul Ball tipped off the hands of a Cubs’ fan (sold for $106,600).
Also auctioned was "Action Comics" #1 - First Appearance of Superman – 1938, a keystone in the comic book collectibles industry. Just thirty years ago, collectors mocked a fellow collector who paid $5,000 for a copy of Action Comics #1. This CGC Restored Grade Apparent VF- 7.5 with Off-White to White pages copy went for $58,139.00.
