Best Buy to Sell Consumer Electronics on eBay

Retailer Best Buy has launched two outlet stores on eBay. The first, a Best Buy branded outlet store, offers consumer electronics and computing products to consumers nationwide. The second, Best Buy's first regional outlet store on eBay, offers select "scratch-and-dent" and returned products to consumers in the North Virginia/Washington, D.C. area.

Being a large retailer or manufacturer does not guarantee success on eBay. Last month, consulting firm Accenture shuttered its Connection to eBay auction-management service. The service had tried to capture what it called the nearly $80 billion in excess or end-of-life inventory processed by U.S. businesses.

Wall Street Journal reported last month some big retailers were disappointed in eBay, citing liquidator ReturnBuy and retailers Home Depot and Omaha Steaks International as examples of companies that have stopped selling on eBay. Part of the challenge for large sellers is the shallow depth of eBay. While you can find almost anything on the site, it doesn't support large quantities of a single item: a perfect example of supply and demand in action.

eBay is in the process of making changes in a move to attract large businesses with its move toward what it calls Item Specifics: adding fields to item listings in addition to "title" and "description." The auction site is also rolling out "Pre-fill Item Information," a catalog of product information that sellers can use to automatically fill in fields based on UPC codes.
