The June auction of R&R Auction, a New Hampshire-based autograph auction house, will feature several documents from the collection of a Texas native. The collection includes a document signed by William Barrett Travis, Commander of the Alamo, dated February 23, 1836, the first day of the siege. The document, in Spanish, is a receipt for provisions used to feed the garrison during the siege. In a three-paged handwritten letter dated March 1st, 1836, Colonel James Fannin explains his reasons for not going to relieve the embattled Travis and his men: "I was unable to move and do trust no bad effects will follow. I would wish life and all for our brave men in the Alamo." And instead he tells his correspondent that they "await our doom until relieved, whipped or we conquer."
The collection up for auction also includes a nine-line handwritten note from David Crockett dated April 14th, 1834. The note, addressed to a lady, wishes her "the happiness and pleasures of the world agreeable to her expectation a lady's of her sterling worth merits." Other documents from Stephen Austin, Sam Houston, Santa Ana, Benjamin Milam, Edward Burlerson, Daniel Burnett, Mirabeau Lamar, and RM Williamson are also featured in the auction catalog.
The auction will be featured on the R & R Web site beginning May 31 and closes at midnight, eastern time, on June 16, 2004. Each item is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and R & R's guarantee. Every month R & R auctions almost 2000 items of celebrity memorabilia, autographs and ephemera.
