eBay Sees Comics as Serious Business

There are over 100,000 items in eBay's comics category, so it's no wonder that they would have a booth at the largest comic book convention in the nation: ComiCon International. Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the San Diego-based convention is home to all aspects of collectible pop-culture, from comics to film, anime, sci-fi/fantasy, toys, and more. Over 87,000 people attended the 4-day show this year in July, not including exhibitors.

Tucked in the front corner of the exhibit hall were several eBay kiosks, with friendly reps on hand to answer questions and invite ComiCon attendees to eBay workshops upstairs. The open air layout made eBay seem more approachable this year, and helped it stand apart from the other booths at the show. The kiosks were equipped with live Internet, which is a rarity on the convention floor. While some people explored the online-auction Web site, others were checking their auctions, and still others were price-checking potential purchases to find hidden gems out on the convention floor.

Those new to the world's largest auction site could attend the "Introduction to Selling on eBay" workshop on Thursday or Saturday. Friday and Sunday featured "Beyond the Basics: Advanced Selling on eBay," hosted by eBay PowerSeller, Shooting Star, and Trading Assistant Christopher Matthew Spencer (aka borntodeal).

The workshops were eBay University sessions, and the crowd Sunday was at three-quarter's room capacity. Our upbeat moderator went through some of the advanced features available, and took questions from the audience at the end. Though the session was an hour long, a lot of material was presented, supported by experiences Spencer joked about. The crowd seemed to consist mainly of exhibitors, both those with online outlets and physical storefronts, as opposed to walk-in visitors.

Mark your calendars. ComiCon: International 2005 happens July 14th through 17th, and is definitely not to be missed.
