PayPal Hiccups over Weekend
By Ina Steiner

October 18, 2004

On Thursday, hours after eBay CEO Meg Whitman posted an online apology for PayPal's 4-day technical glitch, the site apparently hiccuped for several minutes and was unavailable to users (http://www2.ebay.com/aw/announce.shtml#2004-10-14211826). Again on Saturday PayPal experienced accessibility issues for over an hour (http://www2.ebay.com/aw/announce.shtml#2004-10-16111439)

The original problem that spanned over 4 days was due to coding changes made on October 8, when some people began experiencing intermittent problems. By October 11, site accessibility problems were widespread, leaving many to believe the site was experiencing an outage.

An unconfirmed report on an auction sniping service site seems to indicate an additional problem for PayPal users. An announcement on eSnipe's home page reads, "PayPal had a software problem that caused duplicate purchases to be made from the 8th to the 12th of this month. Please check your PayPal purchase history to make sure you haven't been hit by this problem." (http://www.esnipe.com)

It is not known where the site got that information and AuctionBytes cannot vouch for its accuracy.
