Reading AuctionBytes: Mobile Publisher Places Bet on eBay Grilled Cheese

A grilled cheese sandwich won on eBay by an online casino operator is set to appear on mobile phone screens.

Airborne Entertainment, a leading publisher of entertainment content for mobile phones, licensed the image of the grilled cheese sandwich from GoldenPalace.com to put on its Wallpaper Warehouse collection. The online casino won the sandwich on eBay after a jewelry designer posted the item as bearing the face of the Virgin Mary.

Media outlets began writing about the sandwich auction after eBay initially pulled it for violating its policies. The auction site reversed its decision, paving the way for GoldenPalace.com to win the item with a bid of $28,000. The auction received 1,700,000 hits and gained worldwide media attention, as newspapers competed to come up with "cheesy" headlines.

Airborne Entertainment is calling the wallpaper, "Passion of the Toast."

In the meantime, Golden Palace is sending the original sandwich on tour.

"The Holy Grill" will be escorted around the country by Miami Herald reporter, Jim Defede. As the tour moves from Miami to Las Vegas, Jim will supply reports to his Blog describing how people react to their encounter with this incredible piece of Americana pop culture. The tour will pass through towns in the following states: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and into Nevada.
