Publisher John Wiley & Sons Inc. announced it has filed ten lawsuits against eBay sellers. The lawsuits allege that the defendants engaged in the illegal sale of pirated electronic copies of books otherwise available in retail markets as well as pirated electronic copies of instructor solutions manuals, which Wiley distributes, at no charge, solely to professors. Two of the cases have already resulted in the issuance of default judgments in favor of Wiley in the amounts of $18,417 and $24,398.50 respectively. Collectively, the lawsuits involve more than 75 Wiley titles. No word on whether the sellers read Wiley title "eBay for Dummies" before listing on eBay.
