California Asssemblyman Leland Yee decided not to move AB 1178, a bill that would have regulated eBay drop-off stores. Yee's Press Secretary Adam Keigwin said Yee met extensively last Thursday with the parties affected by the bill, including representatives from eBay, pawnbrokers, drop-off stores and law enforcement.
Assembly Bill 1178 would have established a statewide electronic reporting system by January 1, 2008, for pawnbrokers and secondhand dealers. It would also ensure that Internet auction "drop off" stores comply with state licensing and reporting requirements.
Keigwin said they are working to "modernize the system" and make it workable and good for consumers. Yee decided more talks were necessary, so the bill did not meet the deadline for getting out of the assembly. Keigwin said they were looking to tack newly worded regulation onto a different Senate bill so it could still be passed this year (it would not be called AB 1178).
Keigwin called last Thursday's talks "productive conversations."
