Tennessee based, Snappy Auctions, has responded to recent criticism of eBay drop-off stores receiving stolen goods by reiterating their safe guards. Their policy is to always get a driver's license from the consignee and only mail the proceeds check to the address listed on the driver's license after the transaction is completed with the eBay buyer. They claim this deters criminals because they can be tracked down very easily if there is any question about the authenticity of the goods, and they cannot get immediate access to money as they would at a pawnshop.
While this is definitely a step in the right direction, many people think eBay drop-off stores should be required to license as if they were pawn shops, requiring them to notify the police of all items they have been contracted to sell.
Debbie Gordon, founder of Snappy Auctions, has taken the auctioneer training mandated by the state of Tennessee, but says it is not relevant enough to drop-off stores. She says the state "needs to construct new courses that directly address concerns associated with the virtual marketplace."
