Ten-Cent Listing Day on eBay Is a Fraud

If you got an email from eBay President Bill Cobb informing you of a seller promotion, beware - it's another attempt at "phishing." Scammers who send hoax emails continue to innovate in their pitches to eBay users, with the latest one including a photograph of Bill Cobb and promising a 10-cent free listing day promotion. The text reads:

Dear eBay Member,

I'd like to announce a special one-day 10ยข Listing Day Sale, Insertion fees for auction-style and Fixed Price format listings on eBay.com, eBay Motors (for non-vehicles listings) and eBay.ca will be a nickel. All other fees will be at the standard rates. You can get all the details about the promotion on eBay.

eBay's success is based on the success of our buyers and sellers. We understand this, and we're working hard to put those words into action more than ever before. I know a one-day sale is a small gesture, but I hope it helps.

Regards,
Bill

The email even includes a Trust-e logo to give the email an air of legitimacy. A hyperlinked box labeled "Sign Up Now!" takes people to the scammer's website.

The best advice for avoiding phishing scams is to open a browser window and sign into the site you wish to visit, rather than clicking on any link in an email that leads to a sign-in page.
