eBay is holding a challenge for members of its Developers Program supported in part by O'Reilly Media. The eBay Developer Challenge 2006 invites individual developers and open-source teams to submit their most compelling applications in one of two categories: Best Original Application by an Individual and Best Open Source Collaboration by a Team.

Both categories will be judged on uniqueness and innovation, demo-readiness and suitability for the eBay marketplace. Best Open Source Collaboration by a Team will also be judged on the quality of collaboration demonstrated in an eBay Community Codebase project. Applications can be submitted through January 31, 2006. Prizes include more than $5,000 cash and trips to the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in March in San Diego where the winners will be announced.

In Q3 2005, eBay supported approximately 7.5 billion API calls. eBay announced on Monday it was eliminating fees for members of its Developers Program (http://auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y05/m11/i14/s01).
