Glass Auction-Site Turned Dealer Mall Celebrates 8 Years

Just Glass, a website home to 70 dealers specializing in glass, is turning 8-years-old in January. Reyne Haines founded Just Glass as an online auction site in 1997, one of the few auction sites to be founded by a woman. Rosemary Trietsch became co-owner in 2000.

Just Glass has over 14,000 glass items for sale daily with dealers expert in various types of glass including Art Glass, Depression, Carnival and Fenton. Because dealers are able to reach a broader market online, they have no need for a physical shop and have minimal overhead.

Just Glass was originally an auction site that featured "just glass." Haines said people wanted to be able to purchase an item without having to bid and wait to see if they get it. Just like an antique store the price may be negotiated between buyer and seller.

"We started offering fixed-price sales intermixed with our 3-7-10 day auctions. We called them 30-day classified ads. People started spending more money buying than bidding. Eventually we phased out the auction format altogether, and opened dealer shops. It just made sense to us."

"It is a safe and economical way for people to view items from other parts of the country. It takes a large part of the mystery out of buying glass," Haines said.
