The President of the Navajo Nation reported that Overstock's Worldstock department, which supports social entrepreneurship, is now one of the largest sources of private employment on Navajoland. Worldstock purchases handcrafted Native American jewelry, clothing, accessories, artwork, baskets and rugs from 584 Navajo artisans and sells them through the Worldstock tab at http://www.overstock.com.
Patrick Byrne, president of Overstock.com, founded Worldstock in October of 2001 to reduce global poverty. Worldstock contracts with skilled craftspeople in developing countries and helps them establish long- term businesses for selling their products. On average, artisans receive 60 to 70 percent of what consumers spend in Worldstock.
Worldstock plans to begin selling hand-sewn Pendleton wool pillows from women in shelters across the Navajo Nation.
