eBay Listens to Community, Backs Down over Live Pet Listings

eBay said it would not allow the listing of live pets after having said it was hoping to launch a "Live Pets" and "Pet Services" classified format early next year. (http://auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y05/m12/i19/s02).

The original post, made on Friday afternoon, generated an outcry from members who are against the idea of selling live animals on eBay citing animal welfare concerns. At noontime on Monday, eBay said it would exclude commercial breeders and for-profit sale of pets from further consideration but would still consider listings of available rescue animals from vetted local shelters. By Monday evening, eBay announced it would not consider any live-pet listings, whether from shelters or commercial breeders, due to community sentiment.

Instead, eBay has initiated discussions with the president of Petfinder.com, a site that some eBay members had suggested, to talk about possible ways they might work together.

Meanwhile, attention has turned to pet listings on eBay's international websites and Kijiji classifieds sites.
