Reading AuctionBytes: Controversy Swirls around Payment Service StormPay

A Tennessee newspaper reported that the Better Business Bureau (BBB) received a request from the FBI for records on StormPay, an online payment service. The Leaf-Chronicle newspaper said on Saturday that the Consumer Affairs division of the state Department of Commerce and Insurance are conducting an investigation of StormPay (http://digbig.com/4gggt).

On Friday, the Wall Street Journal had reported on a dispute between StormPay and a website called 12dailyPro, which the Journal says is being investigated by federal and state authorities as possible Internet-era variations on a classic Ponzi scheme. (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB113953819846670333.html - paid subscription required).

On Friday, the UK website Netcraft reported that StormPay was the victim of a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS). "The company, which provides online payment processing for thousands of e-commerce web sites, came back online Friday after a sustained attack that commenced last weekend" (http://digbig.com/4ggha). Netcraft said it was the latest in a series of attacks on services that allow web merchants to accept credit cards.
