The Wall Street Journal reports today that Google is increasing the number of sellers who can use its online payment service, saying it could put pressure on eBay and PayPal to cut or even eliminate some fees.
Google had announced in late February it would add functionality to its online billing and payments service that will allow users to pay for online purchases. Google Base, a service that includes classifieds listings, includes an explanation of how sellers can accept Google Payments in its help center. It states in part, "The information on this page pertains to a feature of Google Base currently in limited release to a small number of sellers" (http://base.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=25396&topic=8288). ChannelAdvisor Scot Wingo estimated in a post on his blog that 12,000 Google Base listings accept Google Payments (http://digbig.com/4gspb).
