The eBay Foundation has committed $1.25 million to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to create the eBay Foundation Community Engagement Program. The initiative will encourage citizens and volunteer agencies to use the Internet to fight against six "unfreedoms," defined as racism, hunger, illiteracy, tyranny, genocide and slavery.
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center celebrates the legacy of courage and multicultural cooperation embodied in the story of the Underground Railroad.The Freedom Center uses a wide array of exhibits to educate the public about the historic and continuing struggle to establish universal freedom in both the U.S. and around the world. Over 360,000 people have visited the Freedom Center museum since its opening in 2004, and more than a million have visited the website
The eBay Foundation Community Engagement Program will help address "unfreedom" issues in local communities by engaging the growing population of Internet users. Thirty local agencies and 300 volunteers joined eBay Foundation Executive Director and CEO Irene Wong, Freedom Center CEO John Pepper and Freedom Center President Dr. Spencer Crew to help launch the program at a press conference on Tuesday.
