News outlets in San Jose, California are reporting that there was an explosion at PayPal's North First Street offices on Tuesday night. No one was injured. Authorities were alerted to trouble at 7:34 pm and minutes later, an explosion shattered a large first-floor window. Authorities are investigating the source of the explosion.
eBay acquired PayPal in 2002. Both companies have been the targets of complaints by competitors and customers in the form of lawsuits and "gripe sites," such as PaypalSucks.com, PaypalWarning.com and AboutPayPal.org, that complain about problems with customer service, policies and scams at the online payment service. Eric Jackson recounted PayPal's battles with criminals and fraudsters in his 2004 book, "The PayPal Wars: Battles with eBay, the Media, the Mafia, and the Rest of Planet Earth."
The San Jose Mercury News reported that authorities have suspicions about what may have caused the blast, and said no threats were reported ahead of the explosion. San Jose police are taking over the investigation.
