eBay's online payment service is promoting its pay-by-cell-phone service in the UK. PayPal is holding a promotion in which members who sign up for Paypal Mobile and make a donation to the Shelter charity are entered into a drawing in which they could win £10,000 to pay their mortgage or rent for 12 months. The promotion is open to residents of the UK, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, and Isle of Man.
PayPal Mobile allows consumers to purchase items by sending product codes via text message. PayPal calls the user back to confirm the mobile payment, and then sends the money to the merchant, who then ships the item to the address already saved in the user's PayPal account. The service can also be used to make payments and send donations to charities.
