JK Rowling may have used some Harry Potter wizardry to win an injunction against eBay, which rarely loses in courtroom battles. The Times Online reported on Monday that the author of Harry Potter books obtained an injunction in India that prohibits eBay from listing illegal copies of her work.
This is not the first time India has presented eBay with a major headache. In 2004, police in New Delhi arrested eBay's Country Manager Avnish Bajaj over a pornographic listing a user had posted on its site.
eBay's responsibility for items listed on its site by third-parties has long been debated, with the company calling itself a venue only for legal purposes. eBay has a VeRO program designed to let intellectual property rights owners to report violations to eBay.
