Reading AuctionBytes: eBay Gives Seller Records to Australian Tax Authority

Some eBay sellers in Australia received an email on Monday informing them that the auction site had handed over user information to the Australian Tax Office (ATO). Sellers affected were eBay.com.au users whose annual sales generated more than AU $50,000 during one or more of the financial years between July 2003 to June 2006. According to eBay's letter, it provided the following information to the ATO:

  • Contact name and user ID
  • Email address
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Telephone number
  • Period of membership
  • Monthly sales figures for the period 1 July 2003 - 30 June 2006

According to the Australian, at least one seller is known to have gone into liquidation after a related ATO probe, but the news was welcomed by some sellers in compliance with Australia's GST requirements who compete with non-complying (therefore cheaper) sellers (australianit.news.com.au article).
