Online-payment firm AliPay will begin charging fees for certain transactions beginning April 2. The service is owned by Chinese online-auction site Alibaba. AliPay transactions originating outside of Alibaba and its Taobao C2C auction site will incur a fee of between 1.5 - 3 percent.
Alibaba Vice President of International Marketing Porter Erisman said the new charge applies only to "off-marketplace" transactions. AliPay payments for transactions originating on Taobao and Alibaba will remain free.
The company previously announced that as of December 31, 2006, the number of registered Alipay users surpassed 33 million and Alipay's daily transaction volume reached US$12.8 million (RMB100 million).
