In this week's issue of Data Bytes, we'll take a look at the ten hottest categories of the week on eBay.com and compare prices and sales with those of similar categories around the world. The "top ten" is pulled from Terapeak Research and is based on sales activity during the seven-day period from March 31 through April 6, 2007.
The number one category on eBay.com (which you may remember from two weeks ago) is Stuffed Animals - Other, and the item that everyone is after is the Webkinz stuffed animal. Over the past week, more than 21,000 of these creatures have sold at an average price of $23.69. The highest priced item of the week was the Sherbet Easter Bunny, which sold for $2,550. Wow.
In the U.K., 32 sold at an average price of $24.57, and in Canada 492 items sold at an ASP of $26.10. Apparently these aren't as popular in Germany, where only two were listed and neither received a bid. Neither Australia nor France showed any interest. Must be a local craze.
Next up we have John Deere Lawn Mowers. As we enter Spring in the U.S., lawn mower sales are on the rise. In the past week, 487 John Deere Mowers have sold at an average price of $569.11. The most expensive sold listing in this category was a 2006 110 Backhoe in mint condition, which sold for $28,201. In Germany, 20 listings sold at an ASP of $1,174. In the U.K. 19 sold at an average price of $1,931 (most expensive was a gang mower at $5,413).
One mower sold in Australia for $2,431. In Canada, one sold for $1,236. In France, seven sold at an ASP of $3,031. While it would seem that the prices are much more reasonable in the U.S., keep in mind that many folks list their mower accessories in this category, too.
Wardrobe, under Entertainment Memorabilia and Television Memorabilia, is next on the list in the U.S., with 31 items sold at an ASP of $67.35. The most expensive item was a shirt worn by Rose McGowan in the television show, "Charmed," which sold for $280. This category doesn't seem to exist internationally. I found a few t-shirts in the entertainment memorabilia categories around the world, although none seemed to be actual wardrobe worn by the crew.
Next we have Car Video Systems - Non Navigational. This week 29 have sold at an average price of $101. I was surprised to see that in France, 12 sold at an average price of $269.96 (I thought this might be a U.S. thing). There was also a lonely unit that sold in Canada for $109.
Desktop Video Cards are next - ATI Brand, specifically. In the U.S. 1,551 of these sold at an average price of $60.25. In the U.K., 518 sold at $72. 98, and in Canada, 51 sold at an average price of $105. In Germany, Australia and France, none were listed.
Following Video Cards we have Real Estate Education, under Everything Else, Education and Learning. 542 listings sold in this category at an average price of $78.53. One item sold in this category in Australia for $118, while six sold in Canada for $11.33 and three sold in France for $14.71.
Next we have two similar categories that are equally hot here in the U.S. - Club Cars, and Other Cars, under Electric and Gas Powered Golf Carts. Two hundred eighteen Club Cars have sold at an average price of $246, while under Other, 238 have sold at an average price of $199 (keep in mind, some of these are selling for up to $5000). In Australia, 31 Golf Carts sold at an ASP of $311. Elsewhere in the world, Golf Carts are not as popular as are Electric Trolleys and Caddys. In Germany, 108 of them sold at an ASP of $270, while in the U.K., 104 sold at an ASP of $184. In Canada, no golf carts sold this week but a Segway GT with Golf Caddy Transporter sold for $4001. Fancy! In France, no carts were listed.
At number nine we run into mowers again - Cadet Mowers to be specific. Here in the U.S., 1008 sold for an average price of $131. In Germany, 2 sold at an ASP of $1738 (one of them was a power mower that went for $3,473). In the U.K., nine of these sold at an ASP of $274, while in Australia, one sold for $1953. None sold in Canada or France.
Limited Edition Prints - Modern (1900-1949) are in at number ten with an ASP of $195 and 15 items sold. The highest priced item of the week was a Yaacov Agam "Limited Infinity" hand-signed agamograph at $875.00. On eBay U.K. the same category saw an average price of $132.18 with 151 items sold and the highest priced item, a Banksey HMV Dog limited edition print, at $1791.34. Two sold in Canada at an average price of $29. None of our other countries had any listed.
It seems much of what is so popular here in the U.S. is not as interesting overseas, save for Art and Lawn Mowers. Apparently everyone likes a freshly cut yard. Happy Spring!
