eBay is trying to nudge sellers into using PayPal and get them to set "reasonable" shipping fees by offering them protection from deadbeat buyers. eBay said the Unpaid Item Protection Program is intended to give eligible PowerSellers extra protection when buyers don't pay.
Currently, all sellers are refunded their Final Value Fees when they close an Unpaid Item dispute, and they also get an Insertion Fee credit if they re-list and sell the item the second time. Now, for listings starting August 1st through the remainder of 2007, eligible PowerSellers will also receive a refund for their listing Feature Fees when their listing meets the following conditions:
- The item is listed in an auction-style or auction-style + Buy It Now format.
- Reasonable shipping & handling charges are specified.
- PayPal is accepted.
See eBay's announcement for details.
