Sellers, Auction Sites, React to eBay News

eBay sellers were still reacting to news of dramatic fee and policy changes announced earlier this week. Some sellers said some changes would mean a hardship for their businesses and said they planned to boycott eBay the week of February 18, 2008, to show their dissatisfaction. Other sellers discussed additional or alternative venues on which to sell.

Two small auction sites reacted to eBay sellers by making announcements. Online auction site Tazbar, based in the UK, issued a statement in reaction to changes announced by eBay this week. Founder Director and new co-owner Lee Markham said in part, "We've had good response to the Tazbar Fundraiser programme and to our very recent change in ownership with the day to day team taking over the site. We are simple to use and understand. The changes at eBay are confusing and could bury smaller sellers. We are still free to list and our fees are straight forward and extremely competitive. Tazbar is run by a much smaller team than eBay and we don't have their marketing budgets but we are out there working hard for buyers and sellers and we're really starting to make our mark" (http://www.tazbar.com).

Washington-based auction site ePier posted on its announcement board: "We have made many improvements over the last couple months and continue to make many more important improvements everyday. Please let your family and friends know about your ePier community, and buy and sell for less. Here is just one of many improvements we have made recently for our sellers. All sellers now have a new and improved gallery page free of charge when they have items with images listed." (http://www.epier.com/announce.asp)

Meanwhile, sellers on the Yahoo Group called "yauctionsellers" speculated that there would be an influx of sellers on alternative sites. Yauctionsellers was created to talk about selling activity on Yahoo Auctions. When Yahoo closed its auction site, the group stayed together and decided to support seller issues at eCrater and Bidville: "From those sites, this group is advocating to unite the sellers to build these two sites into viable alternative online marketplaces," according to the Group description (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/yauctionsellers).
