Reading AuctionBytes: AbeBooks Launches Marketplace for Emerging Online Markets

Canada-based AbeBooks.com is launching a new site for Sweden and Russia with plans to expand into Brazil later this year. Gojaba.com is a no-frills, low-cost online marketplace for used, rare and out-of-print books.

Gojaba.com has a simple, low-cost subscription-only business model. Booksellers will be charged a monthly flat fee to list up to 20,000 books for sale. It costs 99 krona (SEK) per month for Swedish booksellers and 129 rubles (RUB) per month for Russian booksellers. Sellers who sign up before February 16 can list their books for free for six months, and no commission fee is charged on sales.

AbeBooks said transactions on Gojaba take place entirely between the buyer and seller, and buyers pay nothing to use the website. The Gojaba.com homepage provides links to regional sub-domains for Russians and Swedes. The website is currently operating in beta, and new features will be regularly added.

AbeBooks.com CEO Hannes Blum said, "We created Gojaba.com to effectively help booksellers sell books and to help buyers find books in markets where the online book trade is developing. Russians and Swedes love books and have embraced the Internet, so we intend to connect buyers and sellers with Gojaba's simple no-frills approach."
