eBay is using a service called Communispace to set up and gather data from an "online community of curious, active, and informed online shoppers." An AuctionBytes reader forwarded an email that said Communispace would manage and facilitate Shoppers Connection on eBay's behalf. The email said potential participants in the community would:
Be Part of an Exciting Community: You'll be part of a vibrant online community of 500 online shoppers talking about your experiences shopping online.
Express Your Opinions: You will help us understand the needs of online shoppers like you -what is important to you in an online retailer, how you use the web to shop, what concerns you most about online shopping, what websites you visit to shop, etc.
Learn From Others: You'll get to see what other members are thinking about and doing.
Receive Gifts: In exchange for your participation, we will offer you periodic rewards - cash rewards, prizes, and other free stuff.
Interact Directly with eBay Decision-makers: You will be able to provide eBay leadership with valuable feedback to help guide the company so they can better meet your needs and enhance your online shopping experience. We'll also answer any general (non-account specific) questions or concerns you might have in a timely manner, and keep you informed about how we are using your feedback.
Form New Friendships: In addition to talking online with eBay, you'll be able to discuss any topics you'd like with other community members.
It's Easy and Convenient: All of this will be done via the Internet, so you can participate from anywhere, when it's most convenient for you.
A 2006 Boston Globe newspaper article said Communispace sets up and runs password-protected online customer communities, which act as "on-call focus groups," for such clients as Kraft Foods and Hallmark Cards.
The anonymous source estimated there were about 900 members on the Shoppers Connection site.
