Will eBay Address Layoffs at Q3-2008 Earnings Call?

eBay will release its third-quarter 2008 financial results on October 15, 2008, and will host a conference call with analysts at 2:00 pm PT. It is President and CEO John Donahoe's third earnings call since he took the reigns from Meg Whitman, who stepped down on March 31, 2008 (she remains on the Board).

Donahoe last spoke to analysts on October 6 when he announced layoffs targeted to reduce eBay's global workforce by approximately 10 percent. While eBay has failed to offer specifics about which international sites and departments would be affected by the layoffs, reports and rumors have surfaced.

Polish press have reported that eBay will close down most divisions in Europe, including the Polish office, and will consolidate operations in London, Bern and Zurich.

Silicon Valley gossip blog Valleywag reported that eBay was cutting 15 of the 105 staff in corporate communications.

An AuctionBytes reader reported that a moderator posted on the DNF board that most of the Community Development team "fell under the axe."

Someone wrote in the comments section of the AuctionBytes Blog, "I am a PayPal Employee that just survived the first round of layoffs. This mostly effected Management and supervisors. Since it's our busy season the hourly employee will probable be let go after the first of the year. The prospect of future layoffs is bound to happen because they left one supervisor who was the only one remaining on his shift with 112 employees, who could manage all those people. The rest of them are walking around asking themselves why they still had a job."

eBay has failed to respond to multiple inquiries about the specifics of the layoffs.
