TIAS Issues Report on Antiques & Collectibles Buyers
By Ina Steiner

February 04, 2009

Online antique and collectible mall TIAS.com released a report on where online buyers of antiques and collectibles originate. The report was generated by compiling all of the online purchases from TIAS.com, AntiquesArts.com and Collectoronline.com during 2008. The data was then used to generate which countries and U.S. states were responsible for most of the online sales in 2008. The results are based on data from tens of thousands of online transactions and millions of dollars in sales over the past year.

2008 Total Sales Revenue by Country

  • 1) United States - Was responsible for 91.3% of online sales
  • 2) United Kingdom - 2% of online sales. A very distant second to the U.S. in sales revenue, but the average order amount was almost double that of every other country including the U.S.
  • 3) Canada - 1.65% of online sales. Bought fewer items than Japan, but bought more expensive items.
  • 4) Japan - 1.4% of online sales. Bought more items than Canada, but they were less expensive.
  • 5) Australia - 1.2% of online sales.
  • 6) Germany - .34% of online sales
  • 7) France - .28% of online sales
  • 8) Italy - .20% of online sales. Bought fewer items than the Spanish, but they were more expensive
  • 9) Spain - .20% of online sales. Bought more items than the Italians, but they were less expensive
  • 10) Netherlands - .14% of online sales.

California represented 12% of total U.S. sales by revenue, New York, 8% of U.S. sales, and Pennsylvania, 7.7% of U.S. sales.

Phillip Davies President of TIAS.com, said that compared to the last such report in 2006, international orders as a percentage of total sales have decreased.

TIAS also generates annual and monthly reports on the top searches for antiques and collectibles as well as the top selling categories. These reports can be viewed in their monthly newsletter at http://www.tias.com/newsletter/cn
