eBay thinks it's getting a handle on malware on the auction site, but wants users to clean up their own computers. The auction site told Silicon.com on Monday it would introduce a new service to users to help them fight malware. The site, eBay Garage, will run an embedded application to scan users' computers for any viruses or spyware using up-to-date malware signatures.
"As we are getting better at shutting off opportunities for criminals to exploit what is happening on our side they are moving to try and attack the customer end," eBay Marketplaces Chief Information Security Officer Dave Cullinane told Silicon.com.
But he left out another potentially vulnerable party - third party developers who help sellers list content on the site. Last week, an eBay third-party developer was hit with trojan malware and continues to cope with the after effects.
Cullinane told Silicon.com that eBay Garage would direct users with malware to a security vendor that provides products to clean up the machine, services that users would no doubt have to pay for in order to use.
