eBay Pushes Classifieds onto eBay Spain

Visitors to eBay Spain are now taken to a main page promoting four eBay properties - "eBay Classic," and three new local classifieds sites: eBay Anuncios (classifieds), eBay Coches (cars) and eBay Pisos (real estate). According to eBay blogger Richard Brewer-Hay, the classifieds content is drawn from eBay's LoQUo classifieds site.

eBay Spain has gone "eCommerce Portal," according to the eBay Ink blog. The Spanish marketplace has launched a classifieds site called eBay Anuncios and is promoting it on the eBay Spain marketplace site, now called eBay Classic.

Brewer-Hay discussed whether this means eBay has plans to do the same on eBay.com. On the one hand, he said, eBay has learned that there are times when regional differences make sense. On the other hand, eBay will be collecting data and "will apply the best of what is learned to our US properties."

eBay owns a number of classifieds site, including Kijiji, Gumtree.com, LoQUo.com, Marktplaats, Mobile.de and Rent.com, and it has a minority investment in Craigslist. In October, it acquired Den Bla Avis (dba.dk) and vehicles site BilBasen (bilbasen.dk) in Denmark. At the time eBay said its online classifieds business had a presence in more than 20 countries and 1,000 cities and said classifieds are the preferred ecommerce format in Denmark.

The Wall Street Journal estimated last September that eBay's classifieds business generated between 5% - 10% of the company's revenue and generated 4.5 billion page views with 82 million visitors to its global classifieds sites monthly.
