USPS Building Mobile Apps, Testing Sale of Greeting Cards

The U.S. Postal Service is making some of the popular functions available on its usps.com website available on cell phones and other mobile devices. New features include Track & Confirm, Post Office locator, and the most popular application, ZIP Code lookup. Robert Bernstock, President of Mailing and Shipping Services, said, "Our new mobile capability makes USPS services even more convenient for our customers."

The Postal Service is also designing applications for the Apple iPhone, BlackBerry and iPod Touch that take advantage of additional capabilities, such as GPS.

The USPS also launched a year-long pilot program earlier this month to test the sale of a limited line of greeting cards in about 500 Post Offices. Initial sites were chosen based on availability of display space, the number of customers visiting the location, and convenience to customers. An additional 1,000 locations will begin offering cards after the first of the year.

The assortment includes cards for birthdays, baby announcements, encouragement, sympathy and wedding anniversaries. Additional seasonal displays will offer cards appropriate to various holidays and times of the year, including Mother’s Day.
