Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman is expected to win the Republican primary for Governor of California on Tuesday against opponent Steve Poizner. She would then square off against former Governor Jerry Brown who is running on the Democratic ticket.
Whitman has spent over $81 million on the campaign so far, including $71 million from her personal fortune gained during her time at eBay. Several controversies have dogged her campaign: her failure to vote for much of her life and her lack of public service, as well as her ties with Goldman Sachs, where she was forced to step down from its Board over a stock-spinning scandal. She's also made numerous blunders well documented by reporters who are frustrated with their lack of access to the candidate.
The Associated Press said that in addition to high-paid consultants (one makes $90,000 a month), Whitman hired a crew of videographers and a former White House photographer to chronicle her stops around the state.
Whitman is politically well connected, having worked for two U.S. Presidential candidates - Mitt Romney, with whom she worked at Bain & Co., and Senator John McCain. Her own campaign has received endorsements from some well known Republicans, including former Vice President Dick Cheney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
