Amazon.com Lets Users Pull Friends' Data from Facebook
By Ina Steiner

It seems appropriate that news about Amazon.com's latest social media feature was broken on social networking site Twitter. Rich DeMuro of Techmeme.com wrote on Twitter on Tuesday, "Cool! Amazon now connects with Facebook for recommendations, birthday reminders, gift suggestions & more http://amzn.to/dCy0lW." The TechCrunch blog quickly picked up the news.

Upon signing in to Amazon.com, users are greeted with a message from the company inviting them to connect to Facebook to get Amazon recommendations and discover friends' Favorites and Likes.

Amazon.com states it will not share users' data, account information or purchase history with Facebook, but asks to access users' Facebook information - and that of their Facebook friends, including friends' birthdays and activities and interests:

  • Access my basic information (Includes name, profile picture, gender, networks, user ID, list of friends, and any other information I've shared with everyone.);

  • Access my data any time (Amazon.com may access my data when I'm not using the application);

  • Access my friend lists;

  • Access my profile information (Likes, Music, TV, Movies, Books, Quotes, Activities, Interests and Birthday);

  • Access my contact information (Current City);

  • Access my friends' information (Birthdays, Current Cities, Likes, Music, TV, Movies, Books, Quotes, Activities and Interests).
